Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," he commented.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
