Conservative reactions to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with some backers of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread black blocks prompt significant questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the redactions break the law, and suggested that a future Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly fails to comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Disclosure
However, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly behind the administration.
The release—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.
Yet some do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the offensive.
“This is pretty rich how the political left falsely claimed President Trump of being a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“This is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from what they will try and hide permanently. So they can release as many low-quality decades-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader discourse on the political right was comparatively subdued following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous demands for transparency that came before the legislative approval to pass a bill requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative personalities were given hard-copy folders of files that included little new data.
